Elon Musk has announced the formation of a new artificial intelligence (AI) research firm called xAI. The company’s goal is to “understand the true nature of the universe” by developing AI systems that can reason and learn like humans.
xAI is led by Musk and staffed by executives who have previously worked at a broad range of companies at the forefront of AI, including Google’s DeepMind, Microsoft, and Tesla. The company has acquired thousands of processors from Nvidia Corp. for the new project.
Musk has said that he believes AI is “the most important technology of our time” and that xAI has the potential to “change the world.” However, he has also warned that AI could be dangerous if it is not developed responsibly.
The formation of xAI is the latest in a series of moves by Musk to expand his involvement in the AI field. In 2016, he co-founded OpenAI, a non-profit research company that is developing safe and beneficial AI. He also owns Neuralink, a company that is developing brain-computer interfaces.
The launch of xAI is a sign that Musk is serious about his ambitions for AI. It remains to be seen what the company will achieve, but it is sure to be one of the most closely watched AI research firms in the world.
